Choosing a pepper Spray Product

How to choose a Pepper Spray Product.

With so much scattered information on the internet about Pepper Sprays I decided to write an article to educate people and help them to determine which device would work best for them.

1^st there was Tear Gas aka CN (Alphachloroacetaphenone) an irritant which causes tearing and a burning pain. Tear gas is affective on most people and takes from 5 to 30 seconds to be affective.  Police in the 70’s and 80’s began to complain that is was not affective at all in some cases on certain individuals who just were not phased in the least by the product and in some other circumstances certain individuals on drugs or alcohol were not bothered by the Tear Gas.

 Please note that on individuals that Tear Gas works on it is an effective tool but it does take 5 to 30 seconds to penetrate the skin pores and be affective.

2^nd Pepper Spray aka OC (Oleoresin Capsicum) was put into action as a self defense tool.  Pepper spray works immediately as an inflammatory agent AND it is an irritant like its predecessor. Pepper spray causes an assailant’s eyes to immediately slam shut and mucous membranes in the nasal passages to immediately swell making it hard for your attacker to breathe.

 These affects are the same regardless of your attackers skin type or if their senses are compromised by either drugs, alcohol, rage or a psychotic state.

3^rd Hybrid Sprays use both Tear gas and Pepper spray (CN + OC = a concoction that makes the toughest of them cry like a baby until the police come)

Hybrids use both of the products described above and put them into one container. Mace makes excellent Hybrid products; some of which are endorsed and used by law enforcement.

4th Pepper Gel and Pepper Foam

A new (Patent Pending) formulation of pepper spray which is suspended in Gel instead of a liquid stream. Name brand

Most people think of the name “Mace” when they think of pepper spray. Mace makes and sells both Pepper Spray and Tear Gas in Hybrid sprays. Mace makes very good products and I highly recommend them.

Scoville scale rating

Some cheaply made pepper sprays do not have high Scoville scale rating when tested by independent labs. These cheap products do not even put a Scoville rating on their products hoping customers will not know the difference.

The Scoville Scale is a measurement of the hotness (or more correctly) piquancy of a chili pepper. Chili peppers of the capsicum genus contain capsaicin, a chemical compound which stimulates the chemoreceptor nerve endings in the skin, especially in the mucous membranes.

I know this is getting long but stay with me for a little longer it will be worth your time when you make an educated purchase of Pepper Spray.

Many times we buy things and then decide to educate ourselves. We sometimes think we wished we had educated ourselves before we purchased...........well here is your chance to get the facts first.

Child safety and products for all situations.

If you have young children do not let that deter your from purchasing Pepper Spray or make it an excuse to wait until your child(ren) is/are older until you can protect yourself and your children.

The key-ring Pepper Sprays actually have locking actuators and a safety position. This is because the manufactures do not want accidental sprays like into a pocket while carrying the devices.

 Key-Ring Pepper sprays are the products I recommend to families with small children although I do caution that you want to put the key ring where your children can not easily get to it.

Much like lighters, matches or knives; you use caution and common sense with these products.

Next we will talk about products for situations.

Pepper Spray has been put into everyday looking canisters to give you the element of surprise. If you know you are getting attacked do not give your attacker warning of your self defense device or time to cover their face and then try to attack you.

The devices listed below will not give your attacker(s) any advanced warning you are even armed.

Pepper Pens are a great device for a person who goes to work with a dress shirt on or someone who commutes to work on public transportation because it looks very normal but it can protect you.

Pepper Pagers are great protection devices disguised as a pager; these look normal and give you the advantage of surprise. These actually use 2 streams of protection instead of one like most devices

Pepper Sprays are also packaged as lipstick and work perfect for women who need to carry protection in their purse or pocket. You look normal in any situation.

Fogger Verse Stream

The last factor to consider before buying pepper spray is if you need a fogger or stream spraying device.

Foggers allow the person spraying the device to not be as accurate when spraying and still be highly effective with their device.

Stream spraying devices work better for people with a good aim and do not seem to be affected as much by a gust of wind which could work against someone who is using a fogger type device.

Note: Most of the time wind is not a factor and even if the person spraying does get some of the pepper spray on themselves it is minimal.

Marking Agent

Some of the better self defense sprays have dyes to help identify the assailant when law enforcement arrive on the scene.

Make a plan

I make it a point to tell my customers to role play in the mirror at home or with their friends. Practice unlocking key chain pepper spray actuators behind their back sides but not in a obvious way. This way they will be ready with their liquid flame thrower.

Practice with your Pepper pens, lipsticks or Pagers. Whatever product you own practice getting it out in a normal looking way and quickly pointing and aiming (ready to shoot).

This way you are ready if or when the time comes to use your product.

You want to be ready like a magician with a magic trick who practices for hours in front of a mirror before they try a trick on a real person.

This is the element of surprise you are looking for. You don't even want your assailant to know what hit them or what happened.

Measure the distance your Pepper spray can spray and keep that in mind when role play. Pretend your assailant has just broken the 8 foot barrier and you have no choice but to pull out your invisible weapon and unleash your fury in a bottle.
